Israel gets US security assurances

Hillary Clinton has met Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, in New York to discuss peace in the Middle East. After the meeting, the US secretary of state said that Israel's security requirements would be "fully taken into account" under any future peace deal with the Palestinians.

They also "agreed on the importance of continuing direct negotiations".

The meeting on Thursday came just days after Clinton said, following talks with Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister, that Israel's decision to build more settlements in the occupied West Bank was "counterproductive".

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports.
